Phoenix Ensemble, Inc., a non-profit 501C3 organization, was founded in 1988 by Tony Wilkes and Marsha Trice, who were motivated by a desire to bring the arts to underprivileged urban communities within New Jersey. The company's mission is to increase the exposure of diverse artist performance and development of artistic expression within the urban community, recognizing that the opportunity to learn the arts no longer existed in the public school system and that African American theater companies had begun to disappear. From 1988 to 1999, the Ensemble produced 25 stage plays using community residents in all aspects of the productions. From 2000 to the present, Phoenix ventured into producing original projects, teaching workshops in the Jersey City Board of Education, including acting, costume and fashion design, stage crafts as well as film making and T.V. production.
As a theater company, Phoenix Ensemble, Inc. has expanded its original purpose to include production of plays and conducting workshops in the performing arts, television and film. The company has performed in different parts of the United States including North Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York City as well as New Jersey.
